Manually Remove the Clog
Use Household Solutions
- Start by pouring a pot of boiling water down the drain to loosen the blockage.
- Add ½ cup of baking soda, followed by 1 cup of vinegar mixed with 1 cup of hot water.
- Cover the drain to let the reaction bubble and fizz for about 15 minutes.
- Flush the drain with another pot of boiling water.
Avoid using this method if you’ve already poured chemical drain cleaner down the pipe. Mixing chemicals can create dangerous fumes or cause a reaction that’s harmful to your plumbing and your health. It’s also important to note that while natural solutions are safe and effective for minor issues, they won’t work on tough blockages.
Take It Apart
- Place a bucket under the sink to catch water or debris.
- Use pliers to loosen the slip nuts securing the P-trap.
- Carefully remove the pipe and inspect it for blockages.
- Use a brush and hot water to clean the pipe thoroughly.
- Replace the pipe, ensuring the nuts are tightened securely.
For your safety, do not attempt this method if you’ve used chemical drain cleaners. Residual drain cleaner can drip from the pipes and cause damage to your skin. However, this is a generally easy and effective method to help remove any blockages that might be in your drain!
